Carvings or products made from whalebone or bone of other marine mammals. Cat skins. Trophies made from sea turtles, big cats, rare reptiles, cranes, pheasants, bears, antelope, and deer. Live species, including pet eagles, hawks, owls, and parrots, certain cacti, orchids, cycads, cyclamens, and carnivorous plants. Importing certain medicines, especially controlled drugs, may be restricted. Pseudoephedrine-containing medications are generally not allowed. Non-compliance with these regulations can result in substantial fines and possible imprisonment.

Besides freight and insurance costs, import duties ranging from 40% to 110% of the vehicle’s import value (depending on its size) are applicable. Additionally, a 10% Import GST is collected upon import. Other fees, such as broker fees, quarantine clearance fees, port handling fees, car safety inspection fees, and registration fees, can easily double the vehicle’s original purchase price.

Before purchasing and importing a vehicle from overseas, it is crucial to be aware of all associated costs. Vehicles left at a customs wharf for over 30 days are forfeited to the State of Papua New Guinea and can be sold or auctioned to recover duty, GST, handling, and storage fees.

To support your claim, you will need to provide documentation such as purchase and delivery receipts, registration and insurance papers, and evidence of when the vehicle, boat, or plane was surrendered for shipping.

If you do not qualify for concessions, you will be required to pay duty and GST on the imported vehicle.
