Phoenix, located in Arizona, is the capital and most populous city of the state, with a population of 1,608,139 residents as of 2020. It ranks as the fifth-largest city in the United States and is the only state capital with a population exceeding one million. Phoenix serves as the anchor of the Phoenix metropolitan area, commonly known as the Valley of the Sun, situated in the Salt River Valley. With a population of approximately 4.85 million people in 2020, it is the 10th largest metropolitan area in the United States and the largest in the Southwest region. Maricopa County, where Phoenix is located, encompasses the largest land area of any city in Arizona, spanning 517.9 square miles (1,341 km2), and ranks as the 11th largest city by land area in the United States. Furthermore, Phoenix is the largest metropolitan area within the Arizona Sun Corridor megaregion, both in terms of population and size. Over a 40-year period from the mid-1960s to the mid-2000s, Phoenix experienced an average annual population growth rate of four percent. While this growth rate slowed during the Great Recession of 2007–09, the city has since made a gradual recovery. As the cultural center of Arizona, Phoenix holds significant importance within the state.
Phoenix has a hot desert climate, typical of the Sonoran Desert, and is the largest city in the United States situated within this climatic zone. It experiences long and extremely hot summers, as well as short and mild winters. The city is located in one of the world’s sunniest regions, comparable to the sunshine duration in the Sahara region. With an annual average of 3,872 hours of bright sunshine, Phoenix receives the most sunlight of any major city on Earth. During summer, it has the highest average high temperatures among major cities in the United States. There are approximately 111 days each year with temperatures reaching at least 100 °F (38 °C), predominantly from late May to late September. Moreover, temperatures surpassing 110 °F (43 °C) occur an average of 21 days per year. On June 26, 1990, Phoenix recorded its highest-ever temperature of 122 °F (50 °C).
In 2017, the Phoenix metropolitan statistical area (MSA) had a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of nearly $243 billion. The top five industries contributing to the GDP were real estate ($41.96 billion), finance and insurance ($19.71 billion), manufacturing ($19.91 billion), retail trade ($18.64 billion), and healthcare ($19.78 billion). If the government sector were treated as a private industry, it would have ranked second on the list, generating $23.37 billion. Real estate developers in Phoenix face relatively few constraints when planning and developing new projects.
As of January 2016, government employees accounted for 10.5% of the workforce, reflecting Phoenix’s role as the county seat and state capital. The civilian labor force comprised 2,200,900 individuals, with an unemployment rate of 4.6%. Phoenix is home to four Fortune 500 companies: Avnet (an electronics corporation), Freeport-McMoRan (a mining company), PetSmart (a retailer), and Republic Services (a waste hauler). Additionally, Honeywell’s Aerospace division is headquartered in Phoenix, hosting many avionics and mechanical facilities in the valley. Intel operates one of its largest sites in the area, employing approximately 12,000 people, making it the second largest Intel location in the country. The city is also the headquarters for U-HAUL International, Best Western, and Apollo Group, the parent company of the University of Phoenix. Southwest Airlines, the largest carrier, serves Phoenix’s Sky Harbor International Airport. Mesa Air Group, a regional airline group, has its headquarters in Phoenix. The military presence is significant, with Luke Air Force Base situated in the western suburbs. While Phoenix faced severe repercussions from the subprime mortgage crash, it has managed to recover 83% of the jobs lost during the recession.
