Cincinnati, Ohio, serves as the county seat of Hamilton County. Established in 1788, the city is situated on the northern side of the confluence of the Licking and Ohio rivers, where the Ohio River marks the state line with Kentucky. As the economic and cultural center of the Cincinnati metropolitan area, it boasts an estimated population of 2,265,051, making it Ohio’s largest metropolitan area and the 30th largest in the nation. The city itself has a population of 309,317, ranking as the third-largest city in Ohio and the 65th largest in the United States. Throughout much of the 19th century, Cincinnati consistently ranked among the top 10 cities in the country by population, surpassed only by New Orleans and the established settlements along the eastern seaboard. From 1840 to 1860, it stood as the sixth-most populous city.
Cincinnati, positioned as a pivotal crossroads city, experienced less influence from European immigrants compared to its East Coast counterparts during the same period. However, it did attract a significant number of German-speaking immigrants who played a crucial role in shaping the city’s cultural institutions. By the end of the 19th century, Cincinnati’s growth slowed considerably as freight shipping transitioned from steamboats to railroads. Other inland cities, notably Chicago and St. Louis, surpassed Cincinnati in population, capitalizing on robust commodity exploitation, economic development, and the expansion of rail networks. St. Louis, in particular, served as a gateway to westward migration for several decades following the Civil War.
Cincinnati falls within the southern limit of the humid continental climate zone, bordering the humid subtropical climate zone. The summers are characterized by hot and humid conditions, with significant rainfall each month and temperatures frequently reaching 90 °F (32 °C) or above on 21 days per year. July stands as the warmest month, with an average daily temperature of 75.9 °F (24.4 °C). Winters bring cold and snowy weather, with January being the coldest month, averaging 30.8 °F (−0.7 °C). Temperatures drop to 0 °F (−18 °C) on an average of 2.6 nights per year. Snowfall accumulates to around 22.1 inches (56 cm) during a typical winter, contributing to the annual precipitation of 42.5 inches (1,080 mm), which peaks in spring. Temperature extremes range from −25 °F (−32 °C) on January 18, 1977, to 108 °F (42 °C) on July 21 and 22, 1934. Severe thunderstorms are common during the warmer months, and although tornadoes are infrequent, notable events have occurred in the Metro Cincinnati area in 1974, 1999, 2012, and 2017.
The metropolitan area of Cincinnati boasts the 28th largest economy in the United States and the fifth largest in the Midwest, trailing behind Chicago, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Detroit, and St. Louis. In 2016, it held the distinction of being the fastest-growing economic capital in the Midwest. The region’s gross domestic product (GDP) reached $127 billion in 2015. The median home price stands at $158,200, and the cost of living in Cincinnati is 8% below the national average. As of September 2022, the unemployment rate in the city is 3.3%, lower than the national average.
Cincinnati is home to several prominent Fortune 500 companies, including Procter & Gamble, The Kroger Company, and Fifth Third Bank. General Electric has also established its Global Operations Center in the city. The Kroger Company, employing 21,646 people locally, holds the distinction of being the largest employer in Cincinnati, followed by the University of Cincinnati with 16,000 employees, making it the second-largest employer.
